Seat Ibiza Becanegra

Seat enhanced its hot hatch repertoire with the stunning Ibiza Becanegra. It is the hottest Ibiza ever, powered by a 1.4-litre turbo and supercharged TSI engine. It is the latest of Seat Ibizas after the FR and the Cupra. All three are powered by the same engine, but Bocanegra is the car that is aimed at keen drivers looking for a super-mini in a bit more stylish outfit.

Bocanegra literally means ‘black mouth’ in Spanish, and as the name sounds, it has a glossy black front end. The front end also looks tough with blackened grill and front air dam enriching its looks. The headlight line and grill blends through the bumper, into a strong character line cutting the front doors and quarter panels. At the back end a roof spoiler, black honeycomb mesh grille, flared guards inserts and a centre exit exhaust catches the eye. The black door mirror housings, 17-inch Sira alloys and a dark tinted sunroof give it the complete look.

The interior complements its exterior looks well with sports seats which feature red stitching and a squared-off three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel. A red-black colour scheme is followed, and noteworthy ‘B’ logos are emblazoned throughout the cabin. The steering wheel also hides the paddles which operates the standard-fit twin-clutch DSG gearbox. Though the interior design is largely unchanged from the Cupra, the layout makes it more attractive. The Bocanegra comes in with a 148bhp or 178bhp 1.4-litre TSI twin-charger engine, which is the same as in Cupra. The twin-charger engine was first introduced in Golf GTI last year and it comprise of a turbo charger and super charger. It forces an induction that makes the pint-sized capacity punch above its weight, enabling it to produce 178 bhp and 184lb ft or 148bhp and 162lb ft. The power it generates depends on its state of tuning.

The Bocanegra will be available with a seven-speed DSG gear boxes. It also has an XDS electronic limited slip differential which is used to channelize the power to the front wheels. The XDS diff use the stability control to maintain traction and eliminates the need for a mechanical differential. These features enable the Bocanegra to do 0-60mph in 7 seconds and also to attain a top speed of 141mph/226kph. The engine offers an economy of 44.0 mpg with an emission rate of 148g/km CO2. Though the Bocanegra engine sound remarkably sporty it feels strained higher in the range and has to be worked hard to deliver its performance. Also, the Bocanegra’s chassis lack the agility and engagement to outdo the main rivals such as the new Renaultsport Clio. It costs ¡ê700 more than Cupra, weighing in at ¡ê16,695. The additional amount buys you unique styling and trim detailing but ultimately it’s up to one’s personal taste to decide whether it has the styling to worth its price.

The Upcoming 2010 Mazda Speed 3

The 2010 Mazda Speed 3 has a huge task ahead of it as it has a formidable competion that even consists of the benchmark hot hatch, the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The 2009 Mazda Speed 3 was praised for its brilliant engine and handling. The Speed3 is the hotter sibling of the regular Mazda3 hatchback, which is available in both the 3-door and 5-door configurations. Priced just short of 25,000 dollars, the Speed3 promises sporty handling and performance for much lesser money.

The interior of the 2010 Speed3 has a different theme with black plastic livened up only by the red accents and stitching. Though the dashboard, clean and uncluttered, looks good at a glance, closer inspection will reveal the complete lack of fine detailing. The interior does not look as sporty as the other hot hatches in the market which have brushed aluminum or chrome inserts to liven up the interior. The turbo boost is indicated by an LED display. The 2010 Speed3 has a satellite navigation which works brilliantly, but is hard to use till one gets used to it because of its small screen size and unconventional positioning. The sat-nav controls are present only on the steering wheel.

The Speed3 differentiates itself easily from the regular Mazda3 with the huge functional scoop on the bonnet. The wheel arches, both front and rear, has a more distinctive flaring. The rear gets a huge spoiler even for the 5-door version. The other visual changes for the Speed3 are the dual exhausts and the stunning 18 inch wheels that now run on a wider set of tires. The Speed3 is definitely one of the best lookers among the hot hatches.

The 2010 Speed3 is powered by the same 2.3 litre turbocharged, inter-cooled, direct-injection engine as before. The engine produces a meaty 263 horsepower, enough to accelerate the car from rest to sixty mph in a matter of just 5.6 seconds. Though the figures of the new engine looks identical on paper to the previous model, the way in which the power is delivered by the new engine is much more linear. The functional air-scoops on the hood feed air into the inter cooler mounted above the engine to provide a smaller path to the intake manifold, and hence lesser resistance. The 2.3 litre four-cylinder engine, which is a peppy performer, is let down only by the loud and un-refined exhaust note.

The interior of the 2010 Speed3 has a different theme with black plastic livened up only by the red accents and stitching. Though the dashboard, clean and uncluttered, looks good at a glance, closer inspection will reveal the complete lack of fine detailing. The 2010 Speed3 has a satellite navigation which works brilliantly, but is hard to use till one gets used to it because of its small screen size and unconventional positioning. The sat-nav controls are present only on the steering wheel.

The Mazda3 uses a different type of front differential that provide phenomenal grip while cornering. That combined with the stiff suspension setup makes the Speed3 a truly exceptional handler. The car is brilliant to be driven fast around corners. However, the ride suffers and it feels uncomfortable on less than perfect surfaces. The 2010 Mazda3 still retains the only serious flaw with the driver train, the catastrophic torque steer that makes one think the front wheels have a mind of its own.

The 2010 Mazda Speed3 has improved in nearly all aspects compared to the 2009 model. It is priced competitively, well below 25,000 dollars and looks quite outstanding. However, the torque steer and stiff ride are yet to be addressed properly. The Speed3 appeals more to the younger generation, but the Volkswagen GTI continues to rule the roost.

The All New Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd has launched the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C. This car has been added to the existing WRX STI line up. It is a high-performance car, and the driving feel is sensational. The C stands for competition and even though Subaru has pulled out of the World Rally Championship it retains the rallying spirit. The only way to distinguish this car from the previous model is by checking out the wheel arches. The car has a 2.0 liter DOHC 16 valve flat four EJ20 engine that generates 305 horsepower at 6400 rpm. It has got a better eEngine control unit that pushes the car to perform even better. The weight of the car has also been reduced to 70 kilogram, and this gives an additional advantage. The customer can choose the 18 inch standard alloy or 17 inch alloy wheels. The Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires provide better stability and control during cornering. The weight has been reduced due to the use of lighter batteries, an aluminum hood, and laminar glasses on the side and front windows.

The car was put to a 0.9 mile test track in SS pack circuit, and the results showed considerable improvement in the performance of the vehicle. The spec C completed the course in 59.8 seconds while the older STI took 61.0 seconds to complete the circuit. The production of the rally car will be limited to 900 units and the price has not yet been confirmed. The spec C model comes with Brembo brake calipers. The buyer has the option of choosing between Recaro and Alcantara leather seats. The car will be available either in pure-white color or a sunrise yellow shade.

The intake air temperature is reduced with the use of inter cooler water spray system. Traction control seems to be superior with the use of mechanical LSD instead of the Torsen unit. The engine of the spec C is extremely responsive and shows improved accelerating performance. The stiffening of the chassis and incorporating a few lighter components makes this a true sports car. The handling of the car has bettered with stiffer springs and shock absorbers, reinforced front ends, large anti-roll bars and upgraded sub frame bushings. A lot of enhancements have been brought about in the engine performance. New ball bearings were adopted to reduce the friction in the turbine axle. The ECU programming can be optimized which this leads to better-pedal response, and the car accelerates with ease. By increasing the oil flow volume in the power- steering system, the handling is remarkably nimble. Rear stabilizer and rear bushes increases the rigidity of the vehicle.
